How do they do it? The sashimi slices keep getting bigger! Posted pictures of sashimi and monkey brains. The owners John and Vanessa are so friendly and always remember me when I come in. My favorite sushi restaurant in all of Tucson. It is 4:20 PM on a Monday, restaurant is already half-full!

I decided to try a new place to get sushi, so I ordered the Philly Roll, Rainbow Roll, and California Roll for take out. The miso soup was okay. Not fantastic, but not bad. The sushi pieces were cut pretty large, some just way too large to fit comfortably in your mouth. Additionally, I don't think the Cali Roll or Rainbow Roll were rolled very well, as when I tried to use chopsticks to pick them up, the bottom would fall out and it would completely fall apart. I ended up abandoning the chopsticks and using a fork. The crab they use tastes sort of weird, and I usually love imitation crab. The Philly Roll was okay, but not great. To be honest, I only ate a couple pieces of the California Roll before I abandoned it. The Rainbow Roll I was pretty unimpressed with. I would personally steer clear and look elsewhere. I've found a couple sushi places I enjoy, although my favorite doesn't do take out. I tried this place before it had decent reviews, but I honestly couldn't believe it was so bad for the good reviews it has. I definitely won't ever be going back.

The food was ok. But the service was terrible. We waited for 30 minutes after our meal was done before we could flag down someone to bring the check. Mind you there were only 3 dinners in the restaurant at the time. The sushi roll was covered in sauce and that overpowered the flavor of the fish. The orange chicken was just fried chicken strips very slightly breaded smothered in a thick sweet sauce.

My wife and I went for lunch. We were pleasantly surprised. Good selection of sushi and very fresh tasting. We will certainly go back.

The service and the owner was extremely nice and were really friendly. Great service, but the sushi was not impressed at all. We tried out the squid salad and the yellowtail belly was ok. So we end up run back down to our usual place for our sushi.

The food here is OK. I would not rate it as over the top but on the other hand not poor tasting either. If there is such a thing as the exact middle of the road this is it. We had a shrimp and vegetable tempura, miso soup, salad, pot stickers and a bowl of some kind of noodle soup. The service was good. A little slow at times and they were not busy but it wasn't bad. Again just middle of the road. I would eat here again if I wanted Japanese food as this is pretty much it for the local area. For the Chinese menu they have I might just go elsewhere. I will however be using them for delivery.

26-Apr 2015 - Still a good restaurant. The fish is still as fresh as can be and the cuts are still oversized and downright yummy. One thing I've noticed today, the older male who usually makes the sushi is now leaving it to his wife. Nothing wrong with that as far as my own preferences go, in fact she makes some good sushi... but now that she is also doing the prep work, the salmon slices seemed somewhat thinner than the usual super thick slices. I hope this was just a fluke because the way I see it the quality of fish and the oversized cuts is what sets Sushi Valley apart from the competition! I wonder if they read these reviews. Will be checking back in a couple of days.

Always a good place for fresh and unique sushi rolls you can't find anywhere else in Tucson. I have been here a handful of times and have always left full and satisfied. As others have commented, their sushi is fresh and the sashimi is almost twice as big as other restaurants. Their other cuisine is usually tasty as well, except for the Pho. If you're looking for good Pho, try Miss Saigon or Pho #1. They have daily lunch specials to round out their menu as well. I usually grab a lunch special with a sushi roll or two and can escape for around $20.

Best sushi I ever had! Unique options. Service can be a little slow but definitely worth it.

Absolutely fantastic sushi place. My girlfriend and I ordered takeout- I got the Oro valley roll and an order of tuna nigiri while she got cucumber roll and avocado roll. Everything was amazing. The flavors were fantastic and everything was perfectly fresh. The value was awesome at just over 20 bucks for the two of us, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I'll certainly be making the trip here regularly.

The food isn't very good here. The rolls are huge, but covered in sauce to make up for the lack of quality fresh ingredients. Even the miso soup was so-so. The service is mediocre and the atmosphere was stale and dry...I'm surprised the other reviews are so good. For us, it was a big disappointment.

I wasn't from the area and was looking for a promising sushi spot for dinner. Judging by my options I didn't have many based on the very few reviews there were for the entire area. I decided to try this place out by the reviews and what I was closest to. The place is quite small, about nine tables with a small bar. My waitress was nice and sincere though with lack of proper English I didn't mind. I ordered a caterpillar roll, avocado roll and a spicy salmon roll. First off, the sushi was expensive but I should've known since I'm spoiled by living on the west coast concerning fresh fish. Also there weren't many options with rolls or makis. The caterpillar roll was prepared wonderfully, the eel was soft and tender instead of crispy and overcooked. The spicy salmon roll was delightful. I was skeptical with it being almost $7 for just a salmon roll but it was a good choice. My avocado roll looked like it was stuffed but realized there was also too much rice, even double rolled. I didn't enjoy that too much. And the spicy mayo was not good to me at all. I'm sure the place has other great options but there weren't many. I don't see myself coming back but it seems to be doing great for the particular area.

Sushi is a VERY delicate and precise process that requires skill and above all fresh fish. This place had fresh fish but everything else was mediocre. Word to the wise: if your sushi is cut in large, thick rolls, then they likely do not know what they are doing. Lovely service and a nice, chill atmosphere for a very tiny restaurant. Sushi Valley? I'll stick to my usual sushi locations.

SOOOO good! Every piece of sushi we had was delicious!* WE had 3 rolls, 2 specially rolls ~pink lady and Oro Valley roll~ and 5 orders of Nigiri. Portions are big* Hands down BEST sushi we've had in town. So fresh *asked where he got his fish ... Showed me the shrink wrapped fish he gets straight from Japan!*, great service and so friendly... We sat at the bar *ALL 6 of us* sushi chef was super friendly and so generous. Gave me samples of sushi that I said I didn't care for from other places.... And now I just love! Every piece was beautifully crafted! He's a master of his craft. Truly a great dining experience! Will be back very soon. *** By the way they deliver!!! As long as your within 5 miles or restaurant and purchase at least $25. What sushi place does that?! Awesome! *** MUST try the ice cream! 4 flavors to choose from... Green Tea, Red Bean, Mango and Strawberry. Come as little balls with a chewy gel coating. Delightful! Group favorite was Red Bean! But all of them were so very good , can't go wrong!

Possibly the worst sushi I've ever had. I was weary when I read they served Chinese and Japanese food, focus on one or the other because the two do not mesh. I almost gagged from the yellowtail sashimi, literally. Fresh sashimi should melt in your mouth, this was chewy and tasted awful. I also ordered the pot stickers and lettuce wraps, both mediocre at best, more like bad Chinese take-out. My advice, go elsewhere!

Our first visit. Great service, wonderful food. We had the Volcano and the Popcorn Lobster Roll. The reviews we checked out before eating here said the Lobster Roll was the thing to order, and it is true...this is one awesome dish. Could not give this place five stars due to the poor quality and condition of the glassware, cutlery and table items. Salt and Pepper shakers were greasy. Plastic water glass worn out, edges chipped, and a dirty wine glass. The web site talked about a "happy hour" but we were charged normal prices for beer and wine when we got our bill. Not sure what "happy hour" prices really mean. A nice family run business with a fantastic menu of Japanese and Chinese dishes including Sushi, Nigiri and Sashimi. You will never leave this place hungry! We plan to visit again soon and try some other items on the menu.

By far the best sushi in Tucson/Oro Valley area. I moved here from California 2.5 yrs ago and I have tried many sushi spots in Tucson and none have come close to Sushi Valley. Coming from Ca. my sushi expectations are high and I have been disappointed many, many times in Tucson. Sushi Valley is the only place I will go to for sushi--the rolls are a decent size, they always taste fresh and flavorful. The spot is small and can sometimes get crowded, but the sushi is delicious and the service is good. I enjoy a quiet place when I'm out to eat and this spot is pretty quiet. They also offer take-out and delivery which is a huge plus for me as sometimes I want sushi but I want to be home too. The location is perfect for me as I prefer not to have to go too far into Tucson. Sushi Valley is definitely the place I would recommend for sushi.

  • Jenni L.

Sushi Valley delivers... quite literally. They have good sushi at reasonable prices and what's that? They deliver! The sushi I had was fresh and tasty. The sushi rolls are a bit fater than I am used to, which is not a bad problem to have. The Pink Lady roll wrapped in pink seaweed is definitely one to try. All in all this place definitely got stored in my phone.

We've eaten here several times and ordered take-out several times; always the same dishes: their Walnut Shrimp and Wonton soup. Their Walnut Shrimp is absolutely excellent! As good, if not better than P.F. Chang's; and it can vary with P.F. Chang's depending on the restaurant. But Sushi Valley's is always consistent. Their Wonton soup is also excellent. We'll get around to their sushi and sashimi, just haven't done it yet. Highly recommend them!

This place is great! Friendly staff, large and delicious sushi rolls. I've been to this place 4-5 times since moving the the area less than a month ago and will keep coming!

Love Asian Food. This was highly recommended by hairdresser. They know everything. Well sat in a booth with a shared back to next table I rocked unpleasantly through out the dinner. Then I had to change seats, sit next to my husband? Well the atmosphere is divey yet the food is good. The prices don't reflect the atmosphere, they are prices of La Encantada... The sushi looked very interesting and original. I won't pay those prices. If you go for only food and don't care about comfort or sound level, have money to burn then this is your new place. sit at a table with chairs on your pile of Money.. I told them about the booths move worse than an airplane seat with someone kicking your seat. They said we know. If you know then fix it.

I know what you're thinking, sushi in Arizona? In Oro Valley? Well I've had sushi all over the USA and this is really good. The fish had always been fresh (as it gets in AZ), the non-sushi dishes are great, interesting rolls. The owners are super sweet too. We're lucky to have such a good sushi restaurant in Oro Valley.

Our favorite place can't go wrong for pad thai, pho, and sushi/lunch specials weekly. Ran by a cute family. Very friendly and hard working. And they deliver too! Most items for lunch are not fried. I love their salad and miso soup too. The crab in the California roll is the best. I am usually picky with my sushi :) I kind of hope not everyone finds out about this place!!

  • Kristy N.

A sushi place that delivers? Why yes they do!!! We order from here quite often and have dined in as well. The food is consistently good. The owners are super nice and friendly. My favorite is the Hawaiian Roll while my husband likes the Oro Valley Roll and the Volcano Roll.

All volume and no finesse Off puttingly large sushi, impossible to eat Quality ok, but difficult to contemplate the industrial size portions Am sure they mean well but this is not sushi as I know it

Sushi Valley is by far the BEST sushi place in Tucson and Oro Valley. We have been to every sushi place in town. John's Sushi's Valley is a very high quality, fresh seafood restaurant with high quality professionalism. Let your taste buds be your guide as words can not describe the quality. I love it!

I used to work at a sushi restaurant, so I'm pretty much a sushi snob. So glad I found this little gem!! We are SO limited here in Oro valley and you have to drive at least 25 min to get to anywhere good. This place was great! It's just a small place, but the service and food are both great and the atmosphere is nice. They have unique, creative rolls that are delicious. There were 4 of us that went to try this place out, and we ordered 2 appetizers, nigiri, and 4 rolls and the check ended up being only $17 per person. The specialty rolls they have are big portions too so it's definitely enough to fill you up. Oh and when you order sushi it comes with a cup of miso soup. The tuna nigiri I had was great. Huge pieces of dark red tuna that were so tender and fresh tasting. I also ordered hot green tea, and it was authentic fresh brewed green tea. I'm so glad I found this place and we will all definitely be back for more! Highly recommend!

I'm a total fan! I love this place. The food is good, there is a lot of different types of food and the staff is super nice. I have tried a lot of different rolls and for the most part they have all been pretty good. I was very impressed with the speed of the service as well as the cleanliness of the place. Also, their cute little orange slices put the experience over the top. They made me laugh, they were adorable I find the comments about this place having an identity crisis hilarious. Variety is the spice of life! Not everyone eats sushi, people have food allergies and let's face it, this is Tucson. A lot of people here don't know the difference between Thai food and Chinese food. I do know the difference and I say as long as it is yummy, bring it on!! Last thing, I love that they deliver, lunch just got much more exciting!!

  • J O.

Very impressed! Quaint, clean, outstanding service, fresh ingredients, it's a wonderful spot for reasonably priced sushi. We came in at an odd time and were greeted warmly and served promptly. We will most definitely be back as this place serves both Japanese AND Chinese menus... Oh how I love options!

  • Erica S.

I'm not sure exactly where to begin this review. I was SO excited that a sushi place was opening up in the area...since others are quite a drive to get to. The service was friendly and attentive...but they also had their children running in and out of the restaurant. The restaurant menu has a bit of an identity crisis; mostly options are Japanese or Chinese but also intermixed are Thai and Vietnamese choices a well. Now to the food...if was just kind of eh, alright. Tempura was soggy, roll was ok, miso soup had some fishy taste to it, nigiri was fresh(thank goodness), and overall the food didn't seem worth the price. This place is new and I'm sure they have some kinks to work out now that they've opened their doors...and I'm looking forward to maybe trying it out again in a few months and hopefully having a better food experience and a more upbeat review to write.

Try the sushi valley roll and the sesame chicken is the best I ever had!! The owner came out and gave the personal touch! They have lots of non sushi options!

I give this place 5 stars for everything over all. There food is always good never left unhappy. They are always so warm and welcoming when you come in and eat and even when you order out. This place is my FAVORITE place by far and I've been to a lot of sushi places to eat. I have to say that sushi valley has topped them off. So go and try this place you would not unhappy.

  • Alexandra B.

I am in the minority I guess, I found their food unpalatable. Sushi was blah, also ordered orange chicken. There were scraps of fried (meat?) and the dish had big cuts of spring onion and smelled of garlic. When I said they had brought me the wrong dish, they stated it was the correct dish. That they don't put orange in their orange chicken. It pains me to write this, the owners have always been lovely and I am rabid for local eaters..... but the food really blows.

I am from San Antonio and they have some outstanding sushi places. This sushi was as good if not a little better. Had the Nogales roll which had cilantro and I have never had cilantro on a roll . It was outstanding!! Also got the sushi valley roll which was a meal in itself but very good as well. I had to take it home .Glad I decided to come here!! If I didn't check yelp I would have never came in!

This is the only Sushi option in Oro Valley, but calling it an option is being overly generous. I'm from L.A. where there were great sushi places everywhere, but Tucson has been sorely lacking in this area. In all of greater Tucson, I've found two acceptable sushi restaurants - this is not one of them. Every other roll here has cream cheese in it, so there goes half the menu. We got a selection of different rolls, but none were very good. Good sushi should not taste the least bit fishy, but all the fish here had that fish smell, which means it was not fresh.

I ended up eating here twice, once for take out and once on a Thursday for a lunch special. I ended up really enjoying both times. I saw no children running through the restaurant. First time I got a few pieces of nigiri, a Valley Fired Roll, and a Philly Roll. I loved each one, they were thick pieces of fish for nigiri and I love that with the Philly Roll they put huge pieces of salmon on the outside. You definitely get more than the average roll (which is why I can put up with the pricier cost). The Valley Fired Roll was the one I was most worried about (it had shrimp tempura on it and a "chef sauce" )...but even after it was delivered, and I ate it last, it held up pretty well. It had a great flavor, but I probably will only order it when I eat in next time. The Thursday Lunch special is really what sold me about this place. Actually every day they have a lunch special but Thursday's is Spicy Tuna Roll and two piece Nigiri for 8.99. That also comes with soup and salad. The chef mentioned it to me when I was already ordering the roll and ordering some salmon and yellowtail nigiri and told me if I had the special it'd be a better deal for me. Honestly, with everything, it was a really good price for the amount of food and it all tasted fresh (you know, for Tucson) I left full and happy. They will probably have to streamline their menu as time goes on...like the other reviewer said there is a little of an identity crisis going on as it is a brand new restaurant. They'll figure out what's working for them and what's not eventually. I haven't tried many of their cooked items but for sushi I thought it was much better than two stars. It also definitely beats having to drive to Sushi Garden or any other extremely mediocre place closer to town.

Visiting Oro Valley, we had a need for sushi and decided to try Sushi Valley. We had a wonderful dining experience. The rolls were great portions and wonderful combinations of flavor. If you order the Sushi Valley Roll its a meal by itself, so much yumminess on one plate. My sister (not being the sushi connoisseur) had the pot stickers and the sesame chicken and loved it. The prices were also very reasonable. If the food wasn't enough, the very friendly service made us feel right at home. Next time I come to Oro Valley, we will be going back to Sushi Valley!

  • C P.

The staff is very friendly. The restaurant it clean and the service is fast. The food is great! It's not cheap though! That's the only reason 5 stars is a reach. I would recommend them to anyone who is in the area and wants good sushi.

  • Thea C.

Pretty good creative sushi and yes they deliver but only if you live in a 5 mile radius. The place is small but wonderful owner and customer services. They provide very good portion for a good price...oh they have fried ice cream which I love but I was too late they ran out...must be good if they ran out so soon! I will go again and again!

  • Deborah B.

I really like this place. The décor is nice, nice seating area. Restaurant is not too big inside and the sushi bar is a bit small, but you don't feel crowded. The food is excellent and they offer a good variety. I get the spicy shrimp ramen a lot. I like several of their rolls and their lunch specials are super good - huge - so bear this in mind. Food is fresh and tasty. Owners are friendly. They do deliver for a $25 minimum (which is a bit steep unless you're all sharing/multiple orders). Deliver is about 30 minutes. Not too bad. The food has always been good here as is the service. Prices are moderate.

  • Allison L.

Will NOT be going there any time soon. Service was LOUSY! They did takeout orders before even trying to serve us. We had our order taken and they served other people their meal before us. LOUSY LOUSY LOUSY!

We love this place and it is very family friendly. We returned today for lunch. Your baby was crying and screaming. We saw the other customers rolling their eyes so we left. Hey, I had an earache already!

  • Carissa L.

Each time I've visited this restaurant I've had a nice experience. The service has been good and friendly. Most of the times I will pick up an item to take home and the way the pack the to-go food is wonderful! You get a salad and miso soup to enjoy with your entree. I usually stick to the Pink Lady roll and along with my salad and miso soup, find this is a meal that hits the spot. On my last visit I was excited to learn that they will deliver within a limited area of Oro Valley!! Looking forward to my next order being a delivery instead of a take-out to go.

  • Deuce S.

When you are a new restaurant, your goal should be to draw customers in. This is done by providing a quality product at good value. This place place does neither. The sushi was not fresh, it was clearly dyed, and the tempura was soggy. But the single star rating comes from the fact that you charge twice what sushi on oracle does without any quality. Try again...

  • Debbi S.

While visiting from Cali we sought out a sushi place in Oro Valley; sushi Valley did not disappoint. I don't eat sushi, but my daughter and BFF raved about the quality and flavor. I had pot stickers and sesame chicken and both were hot, fresh and delicious. Service was excellent and very friendly.

    (5)
  • Robert B.

This is a poor excuse for a Sushi Restaurant. Though they have Japanese and Chinese cuisine, Sushi is in their name and no one should dye their tuna to be pink. The tuna was colored with neon red dye that left a residue on the rice. Big No-No! The tempura roll was mostly rice with a tiny bit of popcorn size shrimp in it with the little tails still on. The fried tempura roll was thick with soggy batter. The Miso soup tastes like packaged mix. We did not try any of the Chinese dishes. Prices were a bit high on those. There are many other Sushi and Asian fare choices in the Tucson area. Just because its in Oro Valley doesn't make it any good. It's too bad. I was looking forward to having a decent Sushi place in town. I'd defiantly skip this place.

  • Fringe O.

I was excited for a Japanese place to open up near my office but was pretty disappointed after eating here. This place isn't vegan friendly and the food is not fresh. I had two rolls with veggies and rice that both showed signs of aging. The miso was bland and had fish or crab in it which would make it unsuitable for vegetarians and vegans. The menu didn't appear very promising in terms of healthy or vegan, vegetarian choices. If you don't regularly eat Japanese food this place may be okay for you but I would not go back.

Visiting from CA with not much hope for good sushi and I was surprised. I ordered about $40 buck worth togo for my room at Conquistador Resort. Delicious, and I mean it. The salmon was perfect and fresh, the tuna melted in my mouth, and I got a couple rolls that were bomb. Oh yeah I ordered the pot stickers too and they threw in salad and miso soup; best miso soup ever it had pickled burdock root in it ... super tasty. I was the only one there on a Monday night, but so what. The next time I'm in town this place is going to be packed...... guaranteed!

    (4)
  • Sabrina D.

I would give it 5 stars but I still think they should work on some more daily deals like other sushi places in town . That being said, I went with a friend and we really enjoyed the sushi we ordered. It tasted fresh and tasty. So glad to finally have a sushi place in our neighborhood and it's great that they deliver too! I hope it does well, both for dine in and for take out.

My family and I have been to this restaurant about six times. So clearly we are big fans. It is an eclectic mix of Chinese Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine. On weekends they serve Pho and curry that I am anxious to try given the other selections we have had has been so delicious. The lobster roll is fantastic. Tonight we changed it up and had soup. I had the spicy Ramen soup and it was incredible. My husband had the Hong Kong wonton soup and it was very hearty. All meals are served with ginger salad and miso soup. I like the miso soup it has a great flavor. The service is very friendly.

The food is excellent and there is variety for the non-sushi eater. The fish is super fresh. Everything came to the table at the right temperature. The service is warm & hospitable. Quaint and comfortable atmosphere. Reasonable prices. There is not anything I would not recommend. Two snaps up!

  • Linda J.

Sushi Valley is truly the best sushi in Tucson. The staff is friendly and sometimes very funny, too. Try the Tempura Shrimp or the spicy tuna roll. Oh, and the Red Curry is fantastic, yum! Every time I go in, there are more and more people. It is getting to be a popular place and rightfully so; the food is award winning quality. To me, it's delisious comfort food. It's just the best.

  • Stacey D.

Good service, great sushi... There aren't a lot of reasonably priced sushi options in town & I'm glad to see one open! They're also willing to accommodate requests for items not on the menu at no extra charge.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly.
